The spam attack seems to have continued until today, and given the too many mysql connections error messages all over the place, I gather it is still going on. The domain itself is back online, after they took it off the net again late Sunday. We are not quite sure where the attack comes from, seems no scripts are involved. But as the other lovely techs at Comforthost got Shi to look at it now, I know we will figure it out soon.
I read up on Spam Attacks on Google, and it seems that we are speaking of 100.000s of spams, in extremly short time spans. They eat up the open connections of a server, which is why they take down whatever domains involved. Clearly and rightfully so.
I am not sure where we stand at this time, but I will update this when we know more. 💡
